Film Music Production
This music was created for large screen formats (primarily IMAX®). Unlike feature films these movies show for many years (To Fly has been showing for 30 years straight!). Therefore the music must feel somewhat contemporary but can’t be trendy. Also, music plays a very large role in this format and though under-score is important, much of the music is up front and very melodic. Specifically tailored demos are available for productions. Most recently Steve won the GSCA award for best music in 2007 for "Hurricane On The Bayou", and also won a Golden Reel Award for Special Venue Music Editor in 2008 for "Grand Canyon Adventure".

Arabia - (2010) Exotic, passionate and beautiful.

Once again, I have been challenged to come up with a score that contains many flavors that I was not familiar with and once again I have been lucky to find an entirely new group of gifted and enthusiastic musicians to assist me in that task. Naser Musa and a variety of artists have helped make a score of passionate and evocative melodies, rhythms and sounds that I believe resides in the part of the soul that we all share as humans. Hopefully as it did for me, this music will open the door to the rich and powerful world of Arabic and Middle Eastern Music. To purchase the CD from PayPal, click the Buy Now button. Greece -Secrets Of The Past - (2005) A unique blend of classical, ethnic and contemporary

Winner of the GSCA Award for Best Film Score of 2006! I fell in love with Greece and its continuing artistic legacy after producing an album for Sony Classical artist Mario Frangoulis. I was thrilled to return to Athens to work in such an elysian atmosphere and composed 5 new songs that were sung by 5 of Greece’s finest singers: Mario Frangoulis, Manolis Lidakis, Nina Lotsari, Evi Siamanta, and Eleni Tsaligopoulou. The score, comprised of variations on those pieces is tinged with ancient ethnic instruments played by young, inspired musicians. To purchase the CD from PayPal, click the Buy Now button. Journey Into Amazing Caves - (2001) Haunting, reverential
(Maximum Image Award winner)

I did a session over the phone from my studio in Laguna Beach, recording local Inuit voices in Iceland. Bikini clad lasses strolling by outside my studio. . . 24 dogs hunkered down in a blizzard outside theirs. I also worked with Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues who is possibly the most gracious fellow I’ve ever had the opportunity to be around. His band recorded 2 new pieces for the film and he played a lot of guitar on the whole score. I’d send him a stack of tracks, he would record over it and ask for more.

Dolphins - (2000) Playful yet beautiful, island flavor
(Oscar® nomination)

After the success of our first film together (The Living Sea), Sting wrote a special piece for this film, “I Need You Like This Hole In My Head”. I was lucky to co-produce the song with Jamaican legends Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Sting also contributed other previously recorded material that I was able to remix and rearrange to match the mood of the picture. I also composed a good bit of music to complete the score.

Everest - (1998) Mixes local mystery with gorgeous and powerful orchestra
(Oscar® nomination) (Maximum Image Award winner)

George Harrison contributed compositions to help capture the feeling of this area for which he felt such a strong bond. My long time partner Daniel May and I scored this film using a tremendous orchestra in a huge cathedral. We also utilized various musicians from Nepal, India and Tibet including a group of Buddhist Monks who happily condensed a 4 hour spiritual chant down to about 45 seconds for us (boy were they easy to work with). This was by far the highest grossing IMAX® Theatre film of all time.

Discoverers - (1993) Unusual textural soundscapes

When director Greg MacGillivrey asked for something different I took him at his word. Mostly electronic elements here combine to form evocative and otherworldly moods. I like to think of this (as I do with much of my work) as the auditory equivalent of an airbrushed sunset on some other planet. . . realistic in the details combining to make something unrreal. This was originally done in 1993 with arcane technology but some of it still holds up. To purchase through PayPal, click "Buy Now" button, to purchase through CDBaby, click album cover.
